About the Author...
Born in Springfield, Massachusetts in 1943 to two parents of Russian-Polish descent, Dr.Sidney Kurn grew up in the small high desert town of Tucson, Arizona. He attended UC Berkeley in the turbulent 1960’s with an interest in mathematics and physics. After three years of graduate school in physics at UCLA, he took a leave of absence to work at M.D.Anderson hospital in Houston, Texas.
This exposure to medicine and the need to work more directly with people resulted in a career in medicine. After attending Mt.Sinai School of Medicine, his background in physics probably influenced his choice of neurology as a medical sub-specialty. Following his residency at USC-LA County Medical Center and two years at The City of Hope in Duarte, California, he moved his family to the northern California town of Santa Rosa.
Living in the beautiful oak studded hills of Sonoma County, he ultimately found time to pursue a long time interest in acupuncture and herbal medicine. In addition to integrating these healing methods into his neurology practice, he helped open an herbal pharmacy dedicated to providing clinical supplements to the community and an on-line store at Farmacopia.net.
His lectures and writings culminated in a book Integrated Medicine for Neurologic Disorders published by Health Press in March of 2008. Sheryl Shook PhD, the co-author was instrumental in shaping the book into its final form.
Dr. Kurn currently finds himself engaged on the tennis court in a mythic struggle with his wife Vicki and learning the habits of tomatoes and zucchinis in his garden while keeping his labrador dog Sunni from eating the entire enterprise! He also loves the music of his two children, Emily and Jeremy, both professional musicians. He is currently working on a second book dealing with diagnosis, disease, and healing.
